Cory Aquino bids Goodbye

http://magkachi.files.wordpress.com/2008/03/cory1.jpg

On the 1st day of August, 3:18 am (Philippine time standard); former president Corazon Aquino failed and struggled to spent and spare more breaths. She wasn’t able to defeat and conquer the traitor disease – colon cancer – and died because of cardio-respiratory arrest.

Today is the second day of the ten day national mourning that was declared by the incumbent president and I as Filipino through this little way would want to give tribute to her importance and contributions.

Cory Aquino brightened the fate of our nation amid of martial law not only because of the blast of yellow as a symbol of protest but also because of her sincere love for our nation. Cory Aquino did not only become an icon of democracy in the Philippines but also around the world. She too became one of the most influencing Asians of her time thus, she did not only return us our freedom but also our intense pride of us being her people and being the people of our nation.

I might not yet be there, when she became a mother not only to her family but to the whole archipelago, but nevertheless I can still feel the sympathy in the lost of one of the most significant Filipinos not only in history but also in the hearts of its citizens and believers around the world.

Your lightheartedness and bravery do not deserve any pain and sorrow but nevertheless I wish that you’ll still be willing to give warmth to our country as you peacefully rest in a place of forever bliss

Goodbye to your soul but not to your love.
We’ll bury your body but not your legacies.
You might not be here in this material world but in our hearts and in the hearts of future generation, you’ll surely be there.

Therefore, all you deserve is our sincerest gratefulness.

Thank You…

Just National Screeches?

http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/english/doc/2005-07/27/xin_02070227102721807501.jpghttp://1.bp.blogspot.com/_pzfuRxMzd3A/RqS6qujINDI/AAAAAAAAAN8/Dxm0MC2mF9E/s400/militants_cagayan_de_oro.JPGhttp://img2.photographersdirect.com/img/26650/wm/pd2176590.jpg

Hours from now is the hopefully last SONA or state of the nation address of President Arroyo.

At her hopefully last year of administration, what do you think should we still expect at her SONA?

In terms of the economy, it’s undoubtedly true that she was able to improve at least the numbers. Nevertheless, it is conformed that the main point of improving the economy is to be able to improve the lives of her citizens and that she failed to do. Even though her TV ad have the capturing line – “ramdam ang kaunlaran”, I as a citizen is not an isolated evidence of poverty thus, it is undoubtedly true as well that she failed to convert the numbers onto reality.

And so, it is national screech to hail for legacy projects that will make the people’s lives better.

In connection, I am hoping that she’ll be passing the cheaper medicines bill in her last year of stay in regime and that she won’t be persuaded by the promises of the pharmaceutical companies. The bill is one of those promising legacy projects that could definitely help Juan Dela Cruz and probably one of the best footprints she could left in the history of her regime.

Other than a promising legacy project, I am expecting that she’ll be talking about her political stand on the constitutional assembly or charter change as well. It is not strange for us, Filipinos, to know a lot of national issues concerning the president and most of us know that she could never be criminalized or be taken in trial for the very least. And so, putting your feet in her shoes… would you let go of power, if you know that the vulnerability would need you to face such issues of yours?

And so, it is a national screech for people to have the assurance that she will be putting end on her regime on the right time, place and event.

Also, I am expecting that she’ll be saying something about the improvement of the state of education in the Philippines. Probably my very concern would be the slow but progressive commercialization of the University of the Philippines. The rising tuition fees of the university is one of the signs or manifestations of commercialization in which the government subsidy is being removed and diminished in time, which is unacceptable. It is unacceptable because it is one of the best university in state that is used to be affordable to most of the people and also it is a state university therefore it is just but right that it would be reachable by the people of its state.

All of those expectations could probably be summarized as help. All we need is help, a form of help that could be felt by every Filipino.

Philippines is still in it to win it.

FORESTS, NATIONAL PARKS, NATURE RESERVES

Puerto Princesa Subterranean River

The first round of screening for the search for the new seven nature wonders of the world had already ended and now the number of nominees is cut down to the top 77 nature spots. For the first round of voting, Philippines rocked the rankings with three of its nominees included in the top 10 namely Mayon Volcano, Tubbataha Reefs and the Puerto Prinsesa Subterranean River. Even though we have 3 nominees included at the top 77, only one could push through as our main nominee for the next rounds screening and since the nominee with the highest number votes will go through, Mayon Volcano and Tubbataha Reefs have to give way for the Puerto Prinsesa Subterranean River.

This time, the competition for the second round of screening is different since the 77 remaining nominees are categorized into 7 groups. The groups are created such that it will be assured that all of the seven nature wonders of the world will be unique. Only 21 nominees will be able to past the second round, which means that the top three nominees of each group will be the only ones that will be competing for the last screening in which the top nominees of each group after the voting period will be declared as the seven new nature wonders of the world. So far, it is too early to relax even though our nominee is at the top because the declaration will still be done in year 2011 and so, we, Filipinos and other supporters as well, should keep on voting our pride, the Puerto Prinsesa Subterranean River.

Check out the new 7 wonders site to learn how to vote and to help your bet promote it.

Also! Support Manila to be the host of the declaration of new 7 nature wonders by also voting at the same site.

The Nature’s Medicine Cabinet

If coconut is also known as the tree of life for its very numerous uses, “Sajina” in the Indian Subcontinent or “Moringa” in English is known as the nature’s medicine cabinet or the miracle vegetable for its high nutritional value. The plant is also known as horseradish tree for its distinct root taste.

The plant wasn’t a stranger for most of us, Filipinos, because it is our favorite “Malunggay”. Malunggay leaves sometimes play as spinaches in some Asian foods similarly on how malunggay fruits were used to play as asparagus substitutes. Horseradish trees loves the hot tropical climates, desserts and living rooms that’s why these trees are scattered around Tropical Far East regions mostly in India, Malaysia, Thailand and Philippines. Also, some species of the plant are found in some western regions like in Mexico. In Philippines, malunggay has a big role in most Filipino dishes esp. in our stews or “tinola’s” for its nutritional and economical advantages.

Malunggay is very economical for it doesn’t need high growth maintenance and in-depth planting skills. A malunggay can be grown by planting a cut branch. A small branch could grow as tall as 15 feet and that contains already a lot of leaves, flowers and fruits. The plant’s surviving skills even make it easier for us to find and to take care of it. Malunggay can survive and grow in drought conditions and can withstand overly acidic, salty and alkaline soil. In Philippines, malunggay trees are just found everywhere and it was so abundant that a malunggay tree even exists around the polluted conditions of the metro. Since malunggay trees are just scattered everywhere, Filipinos can always just pick the leaves, fruits and flowers directly from the malunggay trees that neighbors our houses and my mom, aunts and grandma always do that whenever the kitchen calls for it.

Aside from being economical, some researches and literatures states that most parts of the tree of malunggay are very nutritious for it contain many vitamins like vitamin C and other minerals. The flowers, which appear eight months during the year, contain calcium and potassium. The fruits and leaves of the malunggay also have potassium and calcium. Malunggay contains four times more calcium than milk, three times more potassium than bananas and four times more beta-carotene than carrots. The leaves also contain three times more iron than spinach. In addition to its nutritional benefits, both fruits and leaves contain seven times more vitamin C than oranges.

Aside from being nutritious and economical, Malunggay fruits, leaves and flowers are very flexible and tasteful ingredients. The flowers when cooked are edible and taste like mushrooms, which is nice for vegetarians for mushrooms’ taste satisfies meat cravings. The leaves and flowers could be used to make a healthy tea that is best served to pregnant and newly birth women for it helps in their lactation. Malunggay leaves could always be added in any stews and soups. Malunggay leaves are always good for our digestion and drinking fresh malunggay stock could aid constipation. For those that do not eat rice, malunggay leaves with or without other greens could be made into a pesto sauce that you could use as a pasta sauce, a sandwich spread or a dip. In Philippines, some bakeries offer breads esp. our popular breakfast bread, Pandesal, with different flavors, which includes malunggay.

Malunggay has some medicinal and external uses also. Rubbing freshly squeezed juices of malunggay leaves on back and chest could help in aiding the discomforts of high blood pressure. Juices from freshly pounded and crushed malunggay leaves could also help in healing wounds. A concoction of malunggay roots, seeds and water could be boiled then cooled for underarm odor problems. Small and freshly pounded parts of the roots could be use as a first aid for toothache by applying the pounded parts over the affected area. For sure, malunggay trees has still a lot to offer and so further researches and discoveries about this miracle vegetable could definitely be a world’s treasure. A healthy lifestyle starts from a healthy diet and the best way to start a healthy diet is to know the healthiest food around and knowing the nature’s medicine cabinet might just be a good first step.

Do you really prioritise your religion?

Also scenes captured from a Fiesta in Quiapo

The dedication of these Filipinos is very superficial on the pictures above and it reminds me of a text message that i received not a long time ago and here's the story:

In the middle of one of my boring vacation days, I received a very mind-opening group message in my phone. I must say that it is something that is worth digesting because I usually just read and forget group messages because sometimes it contains nothing but blubbers and senseless stuffs but “the message” belongs to the unique ones for it contains a message that inculcates in your mind.

The message goes like this:

---start---

♥♥♥

Isn’t it strange

How a 100-peso bill

Appears to be a large amount

When you donate it to church

But such a small amount

When you go shopping?

♥♥♥

Isn’t it strange

How an hour

Seems so long

When you are in church

And how short

When you are having fun?

♥♥♥

Isn’t it strange

How everyone

Wants front row tickets

On concerts and show

But they do whatever is possible

To just sit at the last row

In the church?

♥♥♥

A usual but strange reality

We say GOD is are priority

But do we prove it everyday?

♥♥♥

Hope you’ll have time

To pass this message

---end---

My brain ticked and it relayed, “I find it mind-opening and you’ll never find it that way if you are not guilty of it.”

I want to know what your mind told you after reading this message so don’t be shy to leave some comments
