Pink and Blue

I know that some of you might think that this blog is all about the MMDA for its title is Pink and Blue. But, I’m glad to say that this blog does not have any relation with the MMDA instead this blog will be more informative than that by sharing to you two congenital heart diseases, which are called Pink babies and Blue Babies.
http://naqib.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/05/bluebaby.jpg
Blue babies are babies born with a heart problem that causes inefficient transfer or flow of oxygen in a body, which causes the skin to look bluish. Most often, blue babies have hearts with holes or leaks at its septum making the oxygen flow inefficient. Blue babies having very distinguishable skin are easily spotted and diagnosed thus; emergencies, treatments and medications could be easily given and called even if the child is born at home by a midwife.

On the other hand, pink babies are babies born with heart problems that do not cause prominent inefficiency in oxygen flow. Enlarged heart and weak pumping heart are one of the possible congenital problems that the pink babies probably have. Pink babies are called such since their skin is as rosy as the skin of normal babies, and that factor just makes their diagnosis a little harder but there are indications of complications. One of the indications that could identify a pink baby from the normal ones is that if the child doesn’t cry the moment he was born. Pink babies are often the not being identified as normal esp. there are cases that a pink baby is not diagnose since the mother gave birth to her child in her house by a relatively less knowledgeable midwife and then the parents were just going to recognized the complications during the later ages of the child.

Knowing this information is very important esp. for the parents since it could cause the lives of their child and also, watching educational and health service shows would help a lot in keeping our lives healthy.

Smoking and Third hand Smoking

As we all know smoking is bad for our health and those hours of our life is being wasted in every stick of cigar we smoke. In connection, you probably have heard of first hand smokers and second hand smokers.

First hand smokers are those who directly inhale the smoke from a stick while Second hand smokers are those who indirectly inhale particle from a lighted cigar because of exposure to first hand smokers. They say that second hand smoking is more dangerous than first hand smoking because cigars as of status quo have gas filters at one of its ends but nevertheless any type of exposure onto the chemicals inside a cigar doesn’t make any significant difference in its danger. Therefore, if you are a smoker, you should stop as early as possible and if you are a non-smoker make sure to prohibit yourself from inhaling particles from a cigar by doing some precautions. Precautions like covering your mouth and nose when someone is smoking will be helpful but it will be better no to dwell in smokers’ area or places.
http://images-cdn01.associatedcontent.com/image/A4447/444777/300_444777.jpg
Non-smokers could not just be second hand smokers but they could also be third hand smokers. Third hand smoking is a term that was just established and defined lately to me. Third hand smoking is when a person inhales a particle that was left in a place after a first hand smoker lights up a cigar. Particles from a cigar could attach and remain in a place for hours and so people might as well inhale these particles once they stay in such polluted areas and by that time they are third hand smoking. Such poisonous particles could easily attach on fabrics and so we should be very conscious in public places that must have been polluted. In addition, precautions such as putting up a defined no smoking and smoking areas would be helpful in public places such as malls so that there will be clear boundaries between places that is most likely to be polluted. Constant washing of hands is also helpful since their times that are inevitable for us not to hold onto polluted objects. But definitely, the best solution is to have each of our lives nicotine-free or smoking-free because if there are no first hand smokers there will never be second hand and third hand smokers and our world will just become cleaners and more livable.

GREENPEACE going against GMO’s

http://media.supereco.com/media/2009/04/25/320w/the-unhealthy-truth.jpg

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2008/11/03/article-1082559-0038893200000258-392_468x433.jpg

Greenpeace as we all is an international organization that aims to protect and preserve the diversity and beauty of our environment. Fighting against climate change by doing information dissemination and field action is one of its objectives. Aside from clarifying climate change issues, Greenpeace also elucidates and clarifies issues about GMO’s. Greenpeace is against GMO’s or genetically modified organisms, for the organization believes that these organisms that could only exist through laboratory and nature intervention enforces certain side-effects and bad mutation that could damage us and our environment.

Below are the reasons of Greenpeace on why GMO’s are bad for the environment:

The production of unexpected toxins and allergens. Because genetic engineering is a very imprecise technology, the insertion of foreign genes can stimulate the production of unexpected proteins, which may prove toxic or allergenic to those who consume them or may have side effects on the environment. In addition, the introduced gene product itself may trigger allergies. One example is the Brazil nut gene, which was transferred into a soybean. Unexpectedly the soybean became allergenic to anyone with nut allergies and had to be prevented from reaching the market. Luckily, nut allergies are very common and so could be checked for. However, most genetic engineering uses material from organisms such as viruses and bacteria, which are not previously part of the human diet.

Antibiotic resistance. In order to check that the genetic engineering process has worked, scientists add genes that confer resistance to common antibiotics. Although only meant as 'markers' these genes are present throughout the GE food. Doctors worldwide warn that some antibiotics may become useless in human and veterinary medicine because of the widespread use of these antibiotic resistant genes. The European Union and doctors associations around the world have called for a ban on these dangerous markers.

Effects on the Environment. Genetically engineered crops represent new and potentially invasive forms of life. We have already seen the devastating effect that new introduced species can have on their environment as they become pests (e.g. the introduction of the golden snail in the Philippines). Examples of harmful effects that have already been documented from GE crops include the leaching of toxins into the soil, the poisoning of beneficial and harmless insects such as lacewings or monarch butterfly larvae and also the creation of vigorous 'superweeds'. For example, in Canada the field release of genetically modified canola resulted in the creation of triple herbicide tolerant canola weeds.

Contamination of seeds and crops. While many consumers and farmers worldwide are choosing to avoid GE food and crops, people are still increasingly finding even non-GE stocks contaminated. This is due to crosspollination where contaminated pollen is carried by wind or as seeds spread out in the environment or are mixed up during handling. It is also becoming clear that genes can move about due to a little understood process known as horizontal gene transfer where bacteria takes up genetic material and exchanges it with other bacteria either in the soil or in the gut. The fear is that over time everything will be GE contaminated. If something goes wrong, it will be too late.

There are also many ethical and social concerns

GE foods remove consumer choice - Because of the widespread contamination caused by GE crops and the fact that many GE crops are not kept separate in the food system, consumers in the Philippines have been denied the right to choose not to eat genetically engineered food. This is particularly serious since GE foods are not labeled or even regulated here in the Philippines.

Biopiracy - In order to achieve the desired traits chemical companies often use genes acquired from plants, animals and bacteria that is found in poorer countries where most of the world's biodiversity is to be found. The profits and benefits from using these genes generally accrue to rich agribusiness companies based in northern countries. In effect these genes are being stolen from the poor to feed corporate profits. Transnational companies then try to enforce their ownership of these genes through international patent law.

Loss of Farmers Rights - Because genetically engineered seeds are patented, the seed company can maintain strict control over how the seeds are used. US farmers who grow GE crops sign agreements that specify how the crop is to be farmed and promise not to save any seed. If farmers are found to save seed they are sued by the chemical companies. In this way, small farmers lose their basic rights to save seed, which has been the basis of food security since farming began. The GE crop companies now control the seed trade worldwide and US farmers are already reporting that non-GE seeds are becoming very hard to find.

Genetic engineering is unnatural - Because genetic engineering crosses species boundaries and interferes in nature to create new living organisms that would never naturally occur, many people hold moral and spiritual objections to the genetic engineering of living things. Speaking last Nov. 12 2000 to an estimated 50,000 farmers from Italy and elsewhere at a special outdoor mass dedicated to farmers, the Pope expressed his opposition to genetically modified crops.

Well, my stand for GMO’s is that it is all OK for as long as it is done for the preservation of certain genes or species under an environmentally friendly condition.

Oh Boy! You got boobs.

Is it possible for a man to have breasts?

Well, the answer is yes.

A man or even a young girl could have a breast intentionally or unexpectedly by hormone level manipulation. Long term effects of hormones in our body are completely irreversible in the sense that breasts grew by increasing Estrogen in a body cannot be removed or reversed by decreasing the amount of Estrogen in the body. And so, injecting of hormones in a body should be done with the proper precautions and consultation and also it should be handled and supervised by an expert.
Justify Full
http://a.abcnews.com/images/GMA/man_breasts_080222_mn.jpg

Intentional reasons mostly came from gays that want to have breasts without undergoing surgical processes. Some (transsexual) gays are used to inject Estrogen in their body to grow a pair of female breast and some gays also want their hormonally induced breasts to have its lactating capabilities and so, they take in additional prolactin in their body. Prolactin is the hormone that is responsible for lactation that is why prolactin production is usually stimulated in women that have difficulty in lactation.

http://liberaldoomsayer.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/risperdal.jpg

Unfortunately, there are circumstances wherein a man or a young girl could grow a pair of boobs unexpectedly. One case is that when a person is taking in Anti-psychotic drugs. Some anti-psychotic drugs have side-effects that causes an increase in prolactin in a body thus, a person may have sudden grow of breasts in long-term dependence on these drugs. One of the most controversial drugs that cause such side-effect is Risperdal. One day, I was able to watch Inside Edition and they were talking about this drug. It was said that there is a case wherein a child was prescribe with the said drug and the parents, not knowing its side-effects, were surprised when their boy grew a pair of breasts. The side-effect as I’ve said is irreversible and so the child has to undergo mastectomy. The side-effect also caused psychological problems onto the child since the child felt so confused if he is a boy or girl. And so when a doctor prescribes you any drug, make sure to ask if it has any side-effect that must be taken with precaution. Another case wherein a man could grow breasts is when a man is taking in testosterone containing steroids for body building. Taking in additional testosterone of a man doesn’t directly causes a man to grow breasts but it triggers the body to increase Estrogen in the body thus, a man could grow breasts. Estrogen level in a man is very minimal during a homeostatic stage and when there’s a sudden increased in testosterone, homeostasis is disturbed and so in order to bring back the balance in the body, the body increases its Estrogen thus, a may grow a pair of breasts. And so, we should never ever take in steroids without a consultation and guidance from an expert.

And so whenever we need to take in drugs, we should always take into consideration the side effects of the drug and precautionary measures.

Enrollment and Biostatistics (Studying Data in our lives)

I just came from a very excruciating and tiring process of an enrollment and being a first timer makes it even worse. The long time of waiting made me feel hungry and sleepy. Luckily, my patience is just long enough to survive it. But prior to hunger for food was hunger for knowledge. I was hungry for knowledge on my degree, BS Statistics, because of the mind nurturing and eye opening orientation of the school.

The school’s orientation told us everything we need to know about what our lives would be in college. It was said that life in UPD’s school of statistics would definitely be a long winding rough journey to success. It was also said that if will be able to survive, all of our hard work would definitely have well returns, for finding a job would just be as easy as picking a fruit from its tree. The facilitator even told us that most companies are even the one who hunts for us as soon as possible. By that, I just proved to myself that the rules of life would be give and take. Give your best today and you’ll take the best tomorrow.

Aside from the job opportunities, the orientation gave us knowledge onto the flexibility of the degree. It was taught that statistics has an application on any field that has data. And so, it has economic application, psychological application, business application, pharmaceutical applications etc. but what I like the most is the biological applications, which is called biostatistics. Biostatistics has the most impression in me because this solves my problem of being pressured to choose between the two things that I like, which are Biology and Statistics. Also, the orientation gave me a big relief by introducing biostatistics for I have been having second thoughts of pushing it through and biostatistics is just strong enough to motivate me to continue. The orientation just made me feel more thrilled to learn more about my degree and finally, I got a chance to have an equal dose of statistics and biology.

Biostatistics might be able to measure and analyze data and uncertainties related with living things but for sure it can never measure how much uncertainty in life these living things has. Also, I could just always say that statistics might be the smartest fortuneteller for it can still never tell what fate had stored for us next. Lastly, despite of all of this, statistics esp. biostatistics would truly be the smartest thing I could choose for myself.

The Nature’s Medicine Cabinet

If coconut is also known as the tree of life for its very numerous uses, “Sajina” in the Indian Subcontinent or “Moringa” in English is known as the nature’s medicine cabinet or the miracle vegetable for its high nutritional value. The plant is also known as horseradish tree for its distinct root taste.

The plant wasn’t a stranger for most of us, Filipinos, because it is our favorite “Malunggay”. Malunggay leaves sometimes play as spinaches in some Asian foods similarly on how malunggay fruits were used to play as asparagus substitutes. Horseradish trees loves the hot tropical climates, desserts and living rooms that’s why these trees are scattered around Tropical Far East regions mostly in India, Malaysia, Thailand and Philippines. Also, some species of the plant are found in some western regions like in Mexico. In Philippines, malunggay has a big role in most Filipino dishes esp. in our stews or “tinola’s” for its nutritional and economical advantages.

Malunggay is very economical for it doesn’t need high growth maintenance and in-depth planting skills. A malunggay can be grown by planting a cut branch. A small branch could grow as tall as 15 feet and that contains already a lot of leaves, flowers and fruits. The plant’s surviving skills even make it easier for us to find and to take care of it. Malunggay can survive and grow in drought conditions and can withstand overly acidic, salty and alkaline soil. In Philippines, malunggay trees are just found everywhere and it was so abundant that a malunggay tree even exists around the polluted conditions of the metro. Since malunggay trees are just scattered everywhere, Filipinos can always just pick the leaves, fruits and flowers directly from the malunggay trees that neighbors our houses and my mom, aunts and grandma always do that whenever the kitchen calls for it.

Aside from being economical, some researches and literatures states that most parts of the tree of malunggay are very nutritious for it contain many vitamins like vitamin C and other minerals. The flowers, which appear eight months during the year, contain calcium and potassium. The fruits and leaves of the malunggay also have potassium and calcium. Malunggay contains four times more calcium than milk, three times more potassium than bananas and four times more beta-carotene than carrots. The leaves also contain three times more iron than spinach. In addition to its nutritional benefits, both fruits and leaves contain seven times more vitamin C than oranges.

Aside from being nutritious and economical, Malunggay fruits, leaves and flowers are very flexible and tasteful ingredients. The flowers when cooked are edible and taste like mushrooms, which is nice for vegetarians for mushrooms’ taste satisfies meat cravings. The leaves and flowers could be used to make a healthy tea that is best served to pregnant and newly birth women for it helps in their lactation. Malunggay leaves could always be added in any stews and soups. Malunggay leaves are always good for our digestion and drinking fresh malunggay stock could aid constipation. For those that do not eat rice, malunggay leaves with or without other greens could be made into a pesto sauce that you could use as a pasta sauce, a sandwich spread or a dip. In Philippines, some bakeries offer breads esp. our popular breakfast bread, Pandesal, with different flavors, which includes malunggay.

Malunggay has some medicinal and external uses also. Rubbing freshly squeezed juices of malunggay leaves on back and chest could help in aiding the discomforts of high blood pressure. Juices from freshly pounded and crushed malunggay leaves could also help in healing wounds. A concoction of malunggay roots, seeds and water could be boiled then cooled for underarm odor problems. Small and freshly pounded parts of the roots could be use as a first aid for toothache by applying the pounded parts over the affected area. For sure, malunggay trees has still a lot to offer and so further researches and discoveries about this miracle vegetable could definitely be a world’s treasure. A healthy lifestyle starts from a healthy diet and the best way to start a healthy diet is to know the healthiest food around and knowing the nature’s medicine cabinet might just be a good first step.
